Birding Tour of Big Bend National Park
May 20-25, 2021
Cost: $1473.00 Per Person Double Occupancy, 2 Person Minimum – 4 Person Maximum. Single Supplement $500.00.
Spring is a great time of the year to be in Texas and this tour is the third part of our springtime in Texas theme for 2021. Along with the neotropical birds of the Rio Grande Valley and the migratory species returning home through the Bolivar peninsula, the Big Bend National Park and surrounding desert habit, make for a great short tour with unique species. It’s a 7-hour drive from the San Antonio airport out to the desert, so we’ll make the drive in sections. Here is a sample itinerary that we’ll be following throughout the tour:
5/20- Fly to the San Antonio airport by 5pm at the latest and plan to have dinner and make a few hours of the drive to Big Bend before spending the night in a hotel en route.
5/21- Begin the morning early with a trip to Kickapoo Caverns State Park. This is an important stopover location for the Black-capped Vireo and the Golden-cheeked Warbler. We should also see Field Sparrow, Canyon Towhee, Hooded and Bullock’s Orioles, Crested Caracara, Olive Sparrow, Gray Vireo, Woodhouse’s Scrub-Jay, and Chuck-will’s- Widow. We’ll then make the remainder of the drive to Big Bend and plan to stay in lodging within the park itself, or just outside the park, depending on availability at the time of booking.
5/22- Lost Mine Trail- This area is home to White-throated Swift, Ash-throated Flycatcher, Hutton’s Vireo, Mexican Jay, Common Raven, Black-crested Titmouse, Canyon Wren, Black-throated Sparrow, Spotted Towhee, Black-headed Grosbeak, Acorn Woodpecker, Rufous-crowned Sparrow, Common Poorwill, Elf Owl, and Pine Siskin
Break for lunch
Evening birding at the Pine Canyon area for Band-tailed Pigeon, Blue-throated Mountain Gem, Cactus Wren, Scott’s Oriole, and Hepatic Tanager
5/23- The infamous Pinnacles trail. We’re going to make the hike up the trail to locate the Colima Warbler, the bird that only barely touches into the ABA area to breed in the summer. We should also see Bushtits, Bewick’s Wren, Zone-tailed Hawk, and Mexican Whippoorwill
5/24- We’ll stop at the Christmas Mountain Oasis just outside Big Bend for Western Wood-Pewee, Scaled Quail, Lucifer Hummingbird, Bell’s Vireo, Black-chinned Hummingbird, Black-tailed Gnatcatcher, Curve-billed Thrasher, and Olive-sided Flycatcher. After our day of birding, we’ll begin the drive back to the San Antonio airport.
5/25- Flights home. Plan to fly out no earlier than 2pm, as we should arrive at the airport around noon.
Cost per person will be $1473. A singles supplement fee of $500 will be added to the price of the tour if you’re traveling alone. The price includes professional guide, lodging, transportation, park entry fees, and light snacks/water.
